The university's fourth-annual Juneteenth Celebration takes place on June 10-19, 2024, starting off with a 'Women of the Struggle' gallery viewing on June 10 at FIU's Graham Center Pit and culminates with a closing ceremony on June 19th at BBC.

Nova Star Scholarship Competition Show

WPAC Auditorium, MMC
Five contestants will compete in categories such as talent, Q&A session, and a speech on an issue they are passionate about, to become the next Nova Star Ambassador. Ticket sales help fund student scholarships. Doors open at 5:30 pm for the pre-show.

Juneteenth Breaking Free Vinyasa Flow with Live African Drumming

Yoga and Drumming are ancient techniques used to connect us to our roots and our highest selves. Join us for an incredible yoga session with yoga leader, Gabriela, and Baba Shango from House of Kuumba who will be leading the drumming. Register via go.fiu.edu/juneteenthyoga.

Fourth Annual Freedom Day Celebration
Time: 1:00-5:00 pm | Location: Dotson Pavilion, MMC
The entire University community is invited to FIU's fourth annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration. Lawn chairs and mats are welcome as we gather at the Earlene and Albert Dotson Pavilion Lawn (MARC building at MMC). This free community event will feature musical performances by Guitars over Guns and DJ ReRe, local artisan vendors, activities, dancers, food trucks, raffles, and fun for the whole family. A guided painting session will be available 1-5 pm, materials provided!
The first 200 faculty/staff and the first 200 students to register will receive a $15.00 food voucher to use at any of the event’s food trucks. Be sure to stop by the Frost Lounge (guests over 21 only) at the Frost Museum during their annual Summer Exhibition Party.

Juneteenth Closing Ceremony

Join us for a closing ceremony at the WUC Panther Square. There will also be performances by drummers and dancers, food trucks, and special giveaways. Register via go.fiu.edu/juneteenthceremony.
The Nova Star Juneteenth Competition Show
As part of our weeklong Juneteenth Celebration, FIU will be hosting the third annual Nova Star Juneteenth Scholarship Competition Show on June 12, 2024, at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC).
This competition showcases FIU’s Nova Court: students who exemplify leadership qualities, self-confidence, and a commitment to their FIU community and beyond. The contest awards over $8,250 in scholarships to the contestants, including $3,000 to the top winner. Contestants compete in categories such as FIU spirit, talent, Q & A session, and a short speech on an issue they are passionate about.
The Juneteenth Closing Ceremony
As part of our weeklong Juneteenth Celebration, we will be wrapping up with a Juneteenth Closing Ceremony on June 19, 2024, at the WUC Panther Square in the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC).
Spoken Word Scholarship
Spoken word is an important historical aspect of the African and African Diasporic creative tradition and has the power to inspire both thought and action.
All interested, currently enrolled, degree-seeking students attending Florida International University—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or other social and personal identities— are welcome to submit their work for consideration. This year's theme prompts us to "Celebrate, Educate, and Heal".
Those participating in the Nova Star Spoken Word Competition are eligible for one of the following two scholarships if selected as finalists:
Nova Star Griot: $1000
Nova Star Jaliyaa: $500

What does Juneteenth mean to FIU Panthers?
Educating, celebrating, and embracing the truths of Juneteenth can serve to expand the collective knowledge of our entire FIU community. Celebrating Juneteenth complements the work of the founding fathers, being the architects of the Declaration of Independence, and brings to the conversation, the 400 years black Americans have tried to achieve equality in enjoying ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’
